The Role of Underground Space in Future Sustainable Cities

ITACUS

ITACUS OPEN SESSION @ WTC 2018 – DUBAI, UAE

We Think Underground Space

Tuesday March 24th, 14:00-17:00

The co-chairs Antonia Cornaro and Han Admiraal of the ITA Committee on Underground Space (ITACUS) will host this special session focusing on urban underground space in line with the congress’ main theme: How can underground spaces enable cities to develop sustainably and become resilient? In this session we will look at pressing issues revolving around urban development and discuss how underground space can contribute. We will look at new technologies, research and methodologies that could lead to new solutions. As always, we will challenge contemporary thinking and try to move towards new paradigms for the future. You will hear about the work ITACUS is doing and how you can contribute in your country to help cities shift towards an urban underground future. Join us for what promises to be another unique ITACUS Open Session, with a bunch of thought-provoking guest speakers and young members.

As part of the Session Petr Salak will present the latest news and a new video on the Young Professional Think Deep Program (YPTDP). Our participation in the World Urban Forum in Kuala Lumpur in Feb 2018 and our final report from the YPTDP in Wroclaw will be highlighted. Rosanne Verloop will report on setting up the Young Members Group in the Netherlands, and Nicolas Ziv on the Young Members Group in France.

Our National Action Think Deep Program (NATDP) will also be featured with interviews with Petr Salak, the THINK DEEP UK Co-founder and Abidemi Agwor, the head of the Nigerian Tunnel Association who has set up a powerful Think Deep Naija Campaign to promote more infrastructure development underground.

We also have reputable speakers on new developments, research, and initiatives, such as the new SCAUT initiative on investigating underground spaces for urban food production. There will be a panel discussion with external guests on this hot topic.

Speakers in the session include Prof. Priscilla Nelson from the Colorado School of Mines on resilience of integrated above- and below-ground urban infrastructure, Karin de Haas on the long term vision of tunnels in the Netherlands, Rebecca Karlsson on using a VR model of a wastewater tunnel project with a sustainable focus in Stockholm, Nicolas Ziv on his doctoral thesis on multi-functional tunnels schemes bases on Lyon Metro, and Prof. Youssef Diab on the future of underground urbanism in Paris.
